Popularized TikTok Trend Threatens Safety of Hyundai and Kia Owners

TikTok

TikTok is infamous for viral social media trends that influence viewers across the nation. However, in some cases, that level of exposure does more harm than good. In recent months, a record number of Hyundai and Kia models with traditional key functions have been targeted and stolen because of a trending TikTok video.

In the how-to video, viewers learn just how easy it is to break in and steal certain Hyundai and Kia models that do not contain an engine immobilizer. Essentially, this function prevents the engine from being started unless the correct key is present. What’s more, it’s a crucial feature that inhibits a vehicle from being hot wired by an intruder.

Due to the frequency of these events, several class action lawsuits have resulted in the process which is why carmakers are now being held responsible. Although Hyundai ramped up security in November 2021 by making all new models come standard with engine immobilizers, there are a number of vehicles that remain susceptible to this TikTok trend. This includes:

To help alleviate the situation, Hyundai and Kia have swiftly taken the initiative to help the affected vehicle owners. In this post, we’ll detail how Hyundai and Kia are independently addressing this growing concern as well as the safety measures you can take to make sure this event doesn’t happen to you.

Hyundai Motors responds to TikTok trend with $170 security kit

With an average of six Hyundai vehicles being stolen per day in the Milwaukee region, Hyundai has taken an initiative to help protect other car owners who haven’t had their vehicles taken. A new anti-theft security kit is now available at dealerships nationwide. For any Hyundai owners who wish to fend off the recent spike in break-ins, this is the best solution for you.

Included in the $170 kit you’ll find a kill switch and active security alarm to ward off any unwanted passengers. It’s reported that installation will take approximately two and half hours to install. The cost plus installation may bring the final total to $500. Unfortunately, Hyundai is not offering any discounts at this time for vehicle owners with traditional keys and no engine immobilizer.

Although the safety kit became available in October, Hyundai is still working on a software update as well. Ira Gabriel, a spokesperson for Hyundai Motors, said the updated software should be available by early next year. And likely, more updates to follow should the trend continue to cause concern.

Alternatively, Kia is not offering an anti-theft kit or updated software. However, drivers can opt to receive a free steering wheel lock for greater protection. Select Hyundai dealerships are offering the same safety lock as well. Just contact your local Kia or Hyundai dealer to get this security feature in hand.

How Bluelink can help

Even though certain Hyundai or Kia models were made without engine immobilizers, the standard Bluelink technology helps those who are affected  track down their car in the event of it getting stolen. This car tech can easily locate or immobile a stolen vehicle once reported. On the downside, though, the technology does not serve as a barrier to the break-in. The current TikTok video details exactly how to gain control of the vehicle without apprehension.

Does this TikTok trend affect you?

Hundreds of Hyundai and Kia models were targeted within the last year, predominately in the Wisconsin area. This has impacted several car owners both financially and in terms of convenience. Ultimately, with vehicle thefts on the rise, it’s important for car owners to take action as soon as possible. Prevent this popularized TikTok trend from impacting your life and find greater security for your ride.
