The Best Credit Cards for Gasoline

gas station

Want to know the best credit cards for gasoline? We’ve got you covered.

Who doesn’t love saving money? Chances are, if you care about your car, you also care about how it can save you money. If we tell you how you could be getting more cash back every time you spend money on filling up your car with gas, then we probably care about your financial stability and want all of your wildest (financial) dreams to come true. After all, only friends tell friends the best ways to save on things you’re already going to be buying.

Whether or not you’re in the market for a credit card, there are definitely a few cards that you should consider before applying if your goal is to achieve cash back on your car’s gas. Buying gas is something that we all have to do (cough, cough, Tesla owners) so it could be smart to go the extra mile and apply for a credit card that gives you oodles of cash back. Every time you hit the pump, it will hurt a  bit less.

Cult Costco

You probably knew it was going to make the list, so why not start out with a bang? Along with many of its other perks for things like groceries and membership to its stores, Costco offers its Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi to customers who want 4% cash back on “eligible gas” worldwide up to $7000 per year. The cash back then drops to 1% after you’ve hit that $7000 mark.

However, most of us aren’t spending anywhere near that much money on gas per year, so it’s a card worth thinking about. There aren’t many other cards that will offer 4% cash back on gas year after year. And that’s on top of the already low price of Costco gas. It’s a win-win if you love groceries and gas (and the annual fee is $0 if you have a Costco card).

PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature Card

This puppy offers a whopping 5x points on gas purchases, making it one of the best credit cards for gasoline. That’s industry-leading. However, remember that “points” aren’t the same as “cash back.” Points generally accumulate in your account and you can use them as if they are cash, but not always dollar for dollar.

It’s important to examine just how many points you need to pay for certain things. For example, Home Depot might allow a PenFed card holder to purchase a Home Depot gift card at a much more fair point value than Lowe’s. If you’re a huge Home Depot fan and you always purchase items from them, then the points on this PenFed card would absolutely benefit you. Regardless, 5x points on gas purchases is a great deal, and if you have a gas guzzler, this credit card might be worth taking a look at.

Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express

This credit card gives its owners 3% cash back on gasoline purchases. Any card that offers 3% cash back is a great credit card. It also has high approval odds for people who might just be starting out their credit journey, and it’s a great way to get into the American Express network! If you can find a card that offers 3% cash back on gas and you’re looking to apply for a card with gas benefits, this is a great place to start.

Discover it Card

The “Discover it” card offers credit card points for gas. It’s a stellar option when it comes to cash back rewards cards. Every quarter, “Discover it” offers its members 5% cash back (up to $1500) on select categories. Although gasoline isn’t a guaranteed category, it has made it to the list every year since the card was introduced.

Essentially, this means that for four months of the year, you’re going to be able to get 5% cash back on your gasoline purchases up to $1500, which could come out to a total of $75 in cash savings. To make it even better, Discover will match all (yes, unlimited) of your cash back earnings at the end of the first year. Sounds like a pretty solid gas card to us.

A few other credit card points for gas making the short list

If you ask us, all of the best credit cards for gasoline are winners when placed in the right hands. Examine your gas usage to help determine which card might be right for you. You could end up saving a lot of money down the line by loading up on some easy cash back!
