Child Passenger Safety Week: Key Details

This September, the United States Department of Transportation is launching a marketing campaign to promote child passenger safety, known more formally as Child Passenger Safety Week. The purpose of this campaign is to alert parents and caregivers of the importance of child safety in the car. With more knowledge retained, it is with great hope that the number of child-related injuries or deaths will decrease.

Car crashes remain one of the leading causes of death for children. Not to mention, an improper car seat can risk your child’s safety without a crash even occurring. Therefore, learning more about car seat safety and the proper ways to buckle up will help improve child passenger safety in 2021.

When is Child Passenger Safety Week?

Child Passenger Safety Week takes place from September 19th-25th, 2021. The last day of the campaign is being recognized as National Seat Check Saturday. As a whole, the safety promotion will include a number of public service ads (PSAs) that provide parents and caregivers with the right safety protocols and information regarding child passenger safety. On top of that, when your child is ready to stop using a car seat, you’ll know exactly the steps to take to ensure their wellbeing in the car.

Stages of child passenger safety

According to the CDC, the stages of child passenger safety are determined by age. More specifically, ranging from birth to 12 years and older. The CDC outlines the correct way to buckle a car seat or child passenger in your car below:

It’s imperative to have the right car seat or booster seat for your child as well. While you might be apt to accept hand-me-downs, make sure to double, even triple check, that your child’s age is compatible with the type of car seat you have. If not, you’ll know its time to explore other options.

Luckily, the NHTSA offers a Find The Right Seat tool that helps parents and caregivers determine which stage of child passenger safety your little one is at. By utilizing this tool, you’ll know the right decision to make regarding your child’s experience in the car. The ultimate goal is to have your child feel secure, while giving parents peace of mind.

Buckle up

There is no question whether your little one should be properly buckled at all times. The answer is always yes. Even if you’re taking a quick trip around the block, the safety of your child should always be a priority. While in the car, buckle them up for every journey — short or long. Moreover, it gives parents and caregivers the opportunity to set a good example for their adolescents. Fact of the matter is adults should always buckle up too.

With the help of new car tech, seat belt safety is becoming more prominent each year. Child Passenger Safety Week also sheds light on this issue. Even nationwide traffic organizations are helping to put an end to preventable child injuries or deaths. While accidents aren’t always avoidable, making sure your child is safely positioned and buckled in the car will offer them the best protection.
