RAM Stops Producing Electric Pickup Due to Poor Sales

Pickups rank among America’s best-selling vehicles, following sedans and SUVs. Known for its expertise in light- to mid-weight trucks and commercial vehicles, RAM has built a strong reputation under Stellantis North America. Its iconic ram logo—once used by Dodge—continues to symbolize power, reliability, and bold design.

Why an All-Electric Pickup Made Sense

A pickup has everything you may need for a busy lifestyle: plenty of interior space, a high-powered engine, and, of course, a massive amount of storage to suit everyone. This is why RAM decided that an all-electric pickup would make great business sense, as it covers two major hot topics: the uber-popular pickup trucks and the growing electric automobile sector.

Years of Teasers and Delays

While they are well-versed in creating pickups and other larger vehicles, they spent years teasing customers with different pictures and concepts of their foray into the electric sector before revealing an actual car in 2023. It was also delayed last year, with the company citing that they needed more time to meet the safety standards.

The Unexpected Cancellation Before RAM Stops Producing

But now, such an exciting journey for this company is over as they have decided to completely cancel their all-electric pickup truck. In an official statement, they have explained that they believe that the demand for an all-terrain pickup truck in America has started to decrease, so they have reassessed their product launches and decided to discontinue any further development on this vehicle at this time.

Pickup drivers and enthusiasts across America have primarily stayed with combustion engine vehicles amid concerns about the driving range of EV pickups and their ability to tow large weights for extended periods.

The RAM 1500 REV: A New Direction

During this re-think, RAM has renamed its plug-in hybrid pickup from “RAM 1500 Ramcharger” to “the RAM 1500 REV.” Many RAM enthusiasts will find this name familiar, and they would be correct. It is the name that the brand-new all-electric pickup was supposed to use.

RAM planned the EV pickup with impressive features, including twin motors producing up to 645 horsepower and 620 foot-pounds of torque, powered by either a 229 kWh or 168 kWh battery, built on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform. These features would have made it excellent to drive. RAM even went as far as deciding what trim would go on each level of upgrades for this pickup.

Future Possibilities After RAM Stops Producing Electric Pickup

These impressive features will likely drive future mass production and appear prominently in RAM’s upcoming releases.

But RAM is not the only company to downsize its electric vehicle plans over the last twelve months. Several other companies, such as Ford, Rivian, and Tesla, have reported slower sales than usual this year. Some speculate that this is due to the reduction of federal support for battery-powered vehicles coming into effect soon, leaving customers with higher prices to contend with.

It could be a new trend that companies are focusing more on plug-in hybrid vehicles as they are an easier sell to apprehensive customers, especially with the government incentives disappearing. Only time will tell how this change will affect the electric market.
