How to Efficiently Save Gas While Driving

This month the Colonial Pipeline shutdown gave drivers a run for their money. Desperation spread like wildfire across the Southeast, resulting in thousands of people lining up at gas stations to fill their tanks and extra canisters with fuel. To some, the mad frenzy to save gas was irrational, but if you’re desperate to get to work, you have no problem waiting hours in line just to refuel.

Whether the Colonial Pipeline hack affected your area or not, drivers flocked aimlessly to near and far tanks, grabbing as much fuel as possible. The misinformation and pure frantic did make for some good headlines. Weeks later we can still laugh about that.

Joking aside, the recent gas crisis got us thinking: do drivers really know how to save gas when the times get tough? Instead of consuming excess, it’s time to start evaluating ways in how we can reduce our fuel consumption on a general basis. That way, the next time a gas crisis hits our country, we’ll maybe be a little less greedy and a whole lot more conscience.

Effective ways to save gas

We encourage all drivers to implement these useful tricks when a gas shortage occurs. However, don’t limit their use. These suggestions work great on any day of the week. Check out our favorite gas-saving tips below:

Cool your jets

Have the need for speed? Not during a gas crisis. Or how about never? The best way to save gas on a weekly basis is by keeping your speed between 35 to 45 mph. It’s also a good idea to stay on local roads and avoid major highways with elevated speed zones. These moments remind us to enjoy the ride, and not rush to every destination. Even better, you’ll save gas in the long run.

So long A/C, hello fuel-saving

For those who live in tropical climates, this suggestion is like the kiss of death. But still, we recommend you consider it on a nice breezy day. While we don’t suggest anything that could create a heat safety issue, turning off the A/C is a surefire way to reduce fuel consumption. Because the A/C uses a lot of power, it makes it difficult to save gas and in return, creates more trips to the gas station.

Speed racer no more

According to AAA, a “jackrabbit” start or hard acceleration greatly increases fuel consumption. Hitting the brake too hard can also exert extra energy. The clear answer is to keep things light, and you will save gas more efficiently. The next time those trips-color lights switches to green, ease into acceleration. Remember, it isn’t a race.

Desperate for gas? These apps have you covered

When news hits that a gas shortage is happening, it’s hard not to panic. Immediately you think of commuting to and from work, maybe school, or the airport. It’s not ideal. Luckily, gas applications make it easy. Just scroll through available pumps and find out where the best place is to refuel. Aside from the shortage, the gas apps are a great way to price out which pumps are most affordable.

Maybe it’s time to make the switch

When a gas crisis goes down, EV owners get the biggest laugh. This type of national news will never affect them. Just another advantage of driving an EV. If this last fuel crisis has gotten you downright bothered, maybe it’s time you give an electric vehicle a try. Just think, no more visits to the pump each week, no more having to save gas.

Always keep your tank half full

This is one of the oldest tricks in the book. Keeping your tank half full at all times gives you a little wiggle room for when things go awry. Therefore, the next time a gas shortage causes havoc in your area, be thankful you followed this simple rule.

Other ways to save gas

Beyond the helpful tips mentioned above, there are plenty of ways to maintain better fuel economy on a regular basis. For example, keeping up with your car maintenance. Here are a few suggestions to save gas in 2021:

  • Always make sure your tires are properly inflated. Low air pressure equals lower fuel economy.
  • Don’t avoid warning lights. If the check engine light turns on, get your car to a repair shop as soon as possible.
  • Personal items can weigh you down. Don’t let old boxes or gym clothes take up space in your trunk. Eliminate these to save gas.

In conclusion

It might take a gas crisis and some relentless media attention to emphasize the importance of fuel economy, but all drivers should consider reducing their fuel consumption over time. Gas may give your car life, but how you drive can take a toll. In order to maintain your car’s livelihood, sometimes it takes a bit of conservation. Keep this in mind while driving.

    1. If there’s a gas shortage, I usually fill up and try to limit my driving. I’ll do all my errands in one day and keep to local stores. Mapping out where you need to go for the day helps too. That way you’re not aimlessly driving around.
