2025 BMW X5 and X6: A Review

The German automotive company BMW is known for producing luxury vehicles, and none are more revered by BMW customers than their SUV range, more specifically, the best-selling BMW X5 and X6. These SUVs are mechanically similar, with two rows of seats for happy passengers to enjoy their trip. If you are unsure if this SUV would suit your wants, needs, and lifestyle, this article will dissect and compare each vehicle so you can make the correct decision.

Under the Hood of BMW X5 and X6

Both vehicles have the same standard powertrain, which includes a turbocharged, hybrid 3.0-liter inline-six with an automatic transmission that has eight different gears. It comes in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. The X5 rear wheel drive has 375 horsepower and can go from 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds, while the all-wheel drive X5 and X6 can complete it in 5.2 seconds.

You can upgrade the X5 and X6 to several other versions based on your preferences. The X5 can feature hybrid technology, incorporating a battery and electric motor with its powertrain. This can produce over 480 horsepower and complete 060 mph in 4.6 seconds.

The X5 and X6 also come in the M60i xDrive, which contains a light-hybrid technology, 4.4-liter V8 engine with an automatic transmission with eight speeds. It is all-wheel drive that is capable of producing up to over 500 horsepower.

The last variant is the beast in the range as it is the M version of the X5 and X6. It has a turbo-charge V8 engine that can produce over 600 horsepower and complete 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds, unprecedented for an SUV. Due to this speed, it is clearly the least economical in the line-up, with a combined average of 15 mpg.

The Exterior of the BMW X5 and X6

The X5 exterior size is consistent with many other SUVs on the market, including the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and Audi Q8. In the interior, the rear seat does not recline, and there is not as much space as you would expect for such an expensive SUV. But its cargo space is one of the best for its category, featuring a power-operated liftgate and tailgate. It is perfect for storing many items, and customers have also been using it as a baby-changing table, so it is an incredibly versatile space.

The X6’s unusual shape means that passengers will have to sacrifice some headspace and also some cargo space as it has six cubic feet less storage area than the X5.

The Interior of the BMW X5 and X6

Within the inside of both SUVs are comfortable, high quality upholstered seats, giving each passenger a smooth, cozy experience. The upholstery is made using either a synthetic leather called “Senafin” or a more expensive Meriona leather in a range of colours and trimmings. Like every luxury vehicle, there are several add-ons that can increase the feeling of opulence in the X5 and X6, if that is what you need from your SUV. These include a leather-wrapped dash, a number of heated areas, including passenger seating, steering wheels, and cupholders (ingenious!), a number of finishes on the center console, and a high-quality sound system from Bowers and Wilkins.

The Technological features of the BMW X5 and X6

Packed with an array of technological features that are both flashy and useful, these vehicles impress. Although the design includes odd features like gesture control, which they could have skipped, it remains highly functional. The center console contains a 15-inch infotainment screen and a 12-inch information display screen. With the iDrive 8 infotainment system offering a plethora of customizable settings, even down to the appearance of the gauges, it’s essential to request an in-depth tutorial during your test drive. This will ensure you get the most out of your vehicle’s features.

Overall, the X5 is a more traditional medium-sized SUV, while the X6 is more of a hybrid between a coupe and an SUV, a style that is becoming increasingly popular. It has a unique design that includes a sloping roofline, but that does reduce the amount of space available in the interior of the vehicle. Only the X5 comes with a plug-in hybrid feature, which will entice electric vehicle enthusiasts. They are an excellent investment as you get both a reliable vehicle and one with a bit of pizazz.
