5 Renovation Hacks For #VanLife

If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that life can change in a matter of moments. It also gave many drivers a glimpse into a more nomadic lifestyle. Work from home? No problem. How about working from your car? Even better. With no strings attached to an office or a 9 to 5 work routine, many found solace in the open road this year, making #VanLife trend across the nation.

If you’re ready to live the nomadic lifestyle or looking for tips on how to DIY your own van, the following hacks will guide you in the right direction. The rest is simply up to you!

Why van life is the right life

After the pandemic hit, thousands of millennials and other avid adventurers decided ordinary life was no longer for them. They traded in monthly rent payments for an opportunity to travel across the country. Leaving behind hometowns and embarking on a journey west, east, or north. Honestly, wherever the wind took them. Or more correctly, whatever National Park suited their interest.

Buying an old Volkswagen van became more than a passion project, van life captured the hearts of many civilians who simply craved a change of pace after months of isolation. Many adventure enthusiasts began decking out their new homes with custom kitchens, platform beds, and custom pieces. Some even took old furniture and turned it into something completely new.

While some might see it as a challenge to fit everything in 14′ by 5′ space, others saw the task as a clean start. Taking only what you need to live and making the space a true reflection of your style.

5 hacks for your van life reno

These DIY hacks will help make your #VanLife one of a kind. Before you finish your projects, take these simple tips into consideration and make the most of your budget.

Buy a van with roof racks or add them later on

When space is limited, extra storage is a must. One part of making the most out #VanLife is making use of every square inch of space — even the roof! Some rooftop storage container can be costly so you’ll want to find secure options.

Lighting

With lots of windows and natural light you can survive, without lighting during the day. However, when evening hits you don’t want to be sitting in the dark. No matter how far off the beaten path you go, the stars will not illuminate your ride enough to go without indoor lighting. Add LED string lights to the ceiling of your van. Not only will it bring in enough light to your living quarters, the ambiance is hard to beat.

Cook outside

When renovating your dream van, your first instinct might be to install an efficient kitchenette. But if you’re looking to save money and time, cooking outside is the perfect solution. We find this hack works great for #VanLife enthusiasts with limited space. Instead of worrying about ventilation and cabinets, focus on finding a portable grill

Look for floor model appliances or open box options for your #VanLife

When you’re ballin’ on a budget, the best option is to buy floor model markdowns or appliances with slight dents or damages at an affordable cost. Whether you’re in need of a mini fridge or dishwasher, these appliances often work great. Remember, looks aren’t everything.

Composting toilet method

Take DIY to the next level by integrating a composting toilet into your van renovation. If plumbing is too expensive and you’re looking to keep maintenance easy, composting is the way to go.

#VanLife is taking over

Living in a small space is not for the faint of heart. You’ve seen the trend of tiny homes, but now many civilians are seeing the advantage of just living directly out of a bus. There are plenty of unglamorous aspects of van life, but for those who seek adventure it is truly an eye opening experience. All across the globe nomadic workers have redefined what it means to live off the grid.

Once you give it a try, there are some pretty spectacular sights to see.

    1. Stay away from roof mounted tents. They are not as useful in practice as they seem. If you don’t believe me then go ahead and buy one and go camping with it.
