Are Range Rovers Worth The Money?

Back when SUVs were not the object of consumers affection, there was one distinct model that was the epitome of a sport utility vehicle in the U.S. Land Rover’s Range Rover, introduced in 1970, embodied the perfect juxtaposition between luxury and off-road capabilities. Range Rovers started off as a unique, masterfully constructed vehicle and have continued with that legacy ever since.

Decades later, it became more known for its status symbol rather than how well it performed off the beaten path. In particular, Range Rovers became an emblem of the Royal Family and celebrities alike. If you had the means, a Range Rover was happily parked in your driveway.

To have so much prestige is a godsend for any automaker. But what about that boxy, streamlined exterior continues to enchant us all? The performance and four wheel drive? Maybe so. However, a vehicle that skyrockets in price year after year only to be left at the bottom of the reliability list warrants some evaluation.

Range Rovers have come to be an enigma of the automotive world. Mostly due to the fact that consumers are willing to pay the price to drive one. With so many reliable SUV options on the market today, it only leaves us one question: are Range Rovers worth the money?

Why do Range Rovers need so many repairs?

Automotive experts often claim its “luck of the draw”, meaning you could’ve gotten a bad egg of production. But with Land Rover’s Range Rover model, the expectation of repairs is almost humorous. Unfortunately, this rings most true for used Range Rover owners. Frequent leasers are often covered by cushy warranty agreements that prevents them from enduring the financial burn.

With that said, why would anyone invest in a vehicle, specifically one with such high costs, to only find themselves at the mechanic once a month? Not only that, you’re guaranteed to pay exuberant prices to get things back in working condition. That’s a major financial commitment for one model, and a slew of repairs and time lost.

Consumer Reports shows that practically every model year falls into the same category: low reliability. Even with Range Rovers fame and reputation, its suspension, battery life, and gearbox issues unveil its bad side every time. You could be one of the lucky ones that have had a seamless experience driving a Range Rover, but statistics show this is a shared problem among many.

Used Range Rovers can typically stretch in price from $55,000 up to $100,000 depending on the year and condition. While it might be worth it for some drivers to invest so heavily into the brand, other drivers could ride off in a brand new, and more reliable, luxury model for that exact same price.

Are Range Rovers worth it?

Like any car buying decision, the value is left in the hands of the driver. The love for Range Rovers is beyond doubt. Even with low reliability and high repair costs, drivers still buy. That’s the magnetism of the Range Rover model. It might not make sense to some consumers, but for those who gravitate toward luxury and off-roading, this model offers it all.

Now drivers can enjoy the expanded line of Range Rovers available, including the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Velar. Both of which retail at a lower cost than the classic model.

Find your heaven

With the protection of warranties, Range Rovers are worth the price of admission. However, it might cost you some time. If the mechanic visits don’t deter you and you have a second vehicle to use in the meantime, leasing a Range Rover is a perfectly suitable option.

But as far as used car buying goes, definitely stray away from Range Rovers. You’ll simple put more into the vehicle in repairs than its actually worth. That said, you’re better off saving up and enjoying the protected luxury of leasing one  than pitting yourself against financial setbacks.
