Buying a New Car? Here Are Tips For a Test Drive

Is there anything quite as intoxicating as a new car smell? For many, it’s the exact reason you can’t wait to jump into the driver seat of a car. While eager to own a new set of keys, there are certain steps to follow before buying. Most importantly, taking a test drive. The beauty of a test drive is that you can try out a number of rides before signing the dotted line. We suggest all new car buyers fancy a test drive or two before deciding on a certain make or model. It is the best way to find out if a car is right for you.

Since new car ownership is no walk in the park, having the knowledge ahead of time will give you fair advantage when shopping. Keep these test drive tips in  mind the next time you arrive at a dealership.

What to look for when taking a test drive

It doesn’t matter the dealership you choose or whether you have a certain car in mind, it is always a good idea to test drive multiple vehicles. With the wide range of options available, it could take weeks. Although, your best option is to make a list of the top 5 automotive brands you admire and start from there. Once you take a test drive at each one, you’ll be able to narrow down your choice in no time.

Tips for your next test drive

Before you swap your old ride for something new, check out these helpful tips to consider while testing out vehicles near you.

Schedule multiple appointments in one day

Once you arrive at your first dealership, it’s going to be hard to leave. All cars are pretty awesome these days so it’s easy to get distracted by the shiny detailing and safety features. We recommend hitting up several dealerships in one day, and making sure to plan appointments ahead of time. That way you won’t find yourself too absorbed in one specific dealer. Keep your options open until you find the right one.

Check the reviews

We know this is your potential car, but there is something to be said about reading other buyers’ reviews. A lot of the time you’ll get an idea of likes and dislikes of a particular ride. You’ll even find out if certain upgrades are really worth it. For example, a heated steering wheel. Do you really need that? With detailed input, new car buyers can get a feel for what works or doesn’t work with a car.

Don’t buy a car the same day you test drive

It’s tempting to just say yes on the spot, but taking the night to weigh the pros and cons of each test drive is the best way to make an intentional decision. You have to factor several features. If one drives nice but the other has a better price, which one will you choose? Take your time in making a car buying decision.

Bring a friend

Having a second opinion is always a good idea. Bring someone along that will keep you in check and remind you of the must-have features. Let’s face it, you could fall in love with a vehicle for its style or turbo-charged engine, but it could lack in other areas. A friend will keep you focused on what is most important. That’s what friends are for.

Ask about the fuel economy

For every test drive, it’s important to compare fuel economy. You want a vehicle that will stand up against your busy schedule and weekly routines. You want an economy that won’t have you at the gas station every few days. Luckily, most new cars come with great mileage, but some are better than others. Adding this tip to your checklist will help you find the best car for those work commutes and family vacations this year.

Don’t forget to evaluate the car tech

In recent years, car tech has become a major factor in whether a car runs efficiently. Infotainment systems vary in every make and model, so it’s important to try them out. If you are someone who likes simplicity and easy bluetooth pairing, make sure you look for this requirement in your next test drive.

How to test drive the right way

There is no right or wrong way to test drive. But there are certain options that will make your life easier. Once you start the ignition for a test drive, immediately imagine what it would be like if this was your precious ride. Take it around town. Try out the highway and breeze over railroad tracks to see the true performance of a vehicle.

On that note, before you head off to your first appointment, make sure you compose a list of must-have features. Once you do a test drive, you’ll quickly find out if these features are there or not. If not, it’s time to head to your next appointment.

    1. Make sure you test drive the car and bring a friend with you to test drive it too. Use all of the features to make sure they work. Play with the infotainment center, HVAC system, settings, and press all of the buttons throughout the vehicle to make sure they work. Test drive the vehicle and make sure the vehicle responds well when you floor the gas and jam and the brakes. Take a sharp turn in both directions. Roll down the windows and listen while driving. If everything works and you do not hear any strange noises, then make sure to leave the dealership before you come back to buy it. Tell them you are unhappy because the car is missing a feature you really wanted, so you are willing to pay less for it.
