BYD’s New Battery is Breaking Barriers
When it comes to electric cars and SUVs, there are very few brands that are bigger than the Chinese auto company BYD. This EV titan has pushed the boundaries of the new technology, and Tesla finally has a true contender. This week, they have been making waves throughout the world, with every news outlet reporting about the new battery technology they have quietly unveiled.
One of the biggest complaints that electric vehicles owners have is the time it takes to charge their batteries, especially for people who do not have electric car chargers at home. Well, BYD has listened to its customers and come up with a ground-breaking solution.
The Super e-Platform and Blade Battery Technology
They have revealed their new “Super e-Platform,” which contains lithium-ion-phosphate Blade battery technology. This battery is designed to charge to a capacity of 1,000 kW. This means that if you use the new network of ultra-fast car chargers, it will take just five minutes to add up to 470 kilometers to the battery.
If this is correct, it is a true game-changer for electric vehicles as now the BYD electric cars will take the same time to charge as it takes to fill the tank of a traditional combustion engine vehicle.
Positive Market Response and Industry Impact
Following this announcement, shares in BYD have soared due to strong positive feedback and excitement surrounding this new battery. It has the potential to alleviate the concerns many users experience about charging the car’s battery. Charging times are one of the primary reasons that people hesitate to switch from combustion engines to electric vehicles, thereby driving the industry forward as a whole. Other reasons people are hesitant to make the switch include premium model prices, a lack of comprehensive car charging infrastructure, and ensuring their vehicle has enough driving range.
This new battery will be available in the redesigned and updated Han L saloon and Tang L SUV, which will be available in China later this year. It has a 10C charging multiplier, a charging voltage of up to 1,000V, and a maximum current of 1,000A. This system needs all this powder in order to sustain the 1 megawatt of charging power.
Along with a new ground-breaking battery, this powertrain includes new and improved high-performance electric motors. When both the battery and motors work together in tandem, they are capable of producing up to 1,084 horsepower. It can complete 30,511 revs per minute, making it the highest-revving electric motor on the market, and it is the first to surpass 30,000rpm during production.
While some car enthusiasts will understand what all these numbers mean, to put it into perspective for all the rest of our mere mortals, this powertrain has the capabilities of producing more power than a Lamborghini hybrid supercar and, most importantly, more than the Tesla Model S Plaid, to the delight of BYD.
Expanding Ultra-Fast Charging Infrastructure
BYD has also announced that it will be building over 4,000 ultra-fast charging ports throughout China. This will help their new battery reach its 4-minute charging time. This new supercharger contains 1,000kW, which is double the power released from Tesla’s V4 charging system.
The Global Rollout: When Will Other Markets Get This?
While Europe and America will not be able to avail of this powertrain and battery for quite a while, China will be able to use this battery system very soon, so we will find out whether this BYD battery is really the game charger it is perceived to be. For all EV drivers and potential drivers, I hope it is!
