Cars That Are Being Discontinued in 2023

By the time Q4 approaches, auto fanatics can get excited for the upcoming launches of 2023 models. This year, in particular, we suspect a bundle of exciting electric sport utility models to enter the market. By the same token, this time of year also marks the end for some of the more unfortunate vehicles getting left behind. The cars that are being discontinued are often ones that fell out of style or simply represent an old design that has been reinvented in a new way.

From the extent of models set to enter the automotive graveyard in 2023, it’s clear to see that automakers are making aggressive changes to the lineup and allocating costs towards models that generally attract more buyers.

The vehicles that will leave showrooms in 2023 include mostly sedans, such as the Toyota Avalon and Honda Insight. While consumers continue to pivot their interests towards compact and mid-size SUVs, the sedan category will likely keep fading into the distance. They are currently the cars that are being discontinued most frequently each year as consumer tastes have evolved.

Let’s take a look at the cars and SUVs you won’t get to see new on car lots in 2023:

Buick Encore

After being introduced in 2013, the Encore came to be Buick’s budget-savvy option for young buyers. With plenty of cargo space and car tech to satisfy modern needs, this subcompact model had good intentions from the start. However, by 2021, sales were plummeting fast due to the stiff competition in the market and within General Motors lineup.

Chevrolet Spark

Although we’ve been anticipating the end of Spark production for some time now, it’s a little hard to part ways with the most affordable car on the market. Especially in these pricey times! As the vehicle with the lowest starting price, the Spark gave certain consumers an option that most automakers could not. As Chevy transitions to electric batteries, the Spark will hopefully be replaced by something new (and as affordable).

Honda Insight

Honda’s plan to end production of the Insight simply narrows down to a change of focus. With hybrids on the mind for consumer-favorite models, such as the Civic Hybrid, the lesser popular Insight would stand in the way. It would become a form of competition on the lineup rather than a contribution to sales. Luckily, the model mimics the design of the Accord and Civic, so it shouldn’t be missed too much by those who are looking for something similar.

Ford EcoSport

Even though this model was launched in 2017, it never really stoke a chord with American consumers. Up to date, it is Ford’s smallest and most affordable SUV. While that may sound appealing to some, it’s gotten overshadowed by a number of spacier options on the lineup. With sales in decline since the pandemic days, Ford’s parting ways with this compact SUV and preparing for an all-electric future instead.

Hyundai Accent

The Accent has always been Hyundai’s best option for low-budget shoppers. In fact, it’s the lowest price vehicle among the lineup. However, in recent times, the favorable Hyundai Elantra has outshined the Accent. Mostly, its close pricing has made it difficult for the Accent to compete. On top of that, buyers would rather gravitate toward the subcompact Venue instead of a small sedan.

Other models nearing the end of the road include:

  • Acura ILX
  • Lexus RX L
  • Toyota Avalon
  • Volkswagen Passat
