Ford Recalls 2020–2022 Explorer Models Over Potential Rollaway Risk

Ford has recently issued a recall for 238,364 Explorer SUVs spanning the 2020 to 2022 model years, citing a potential defect that could compromise the vehicle’s power and even result in unintended rollaway incidents if the parking brake is not engaged. This news has drawn significant attention and concern from both current and potential owners of 2020–2022 Explorer Models.

We’ll briefly detail the root of the recall along with the steps that Explorer owners should take to ensure their safety. First, upon receiving the official notification from Ford, it is crucial to schedule an appointment with an authorized Ford dealership to have the affected SUV inspected and repairs carried out.

What caused the Ford Recall on 2020-2022 Explorer Models?

The root cause of this safety concern lies in a combination of faulty subframe bushings and rear axle bolts, as revealed by the official documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The reports suggest that the potential fracture of the rear axle bolt and subsequent misalignment of the axle housing may trigger noticeable warning signs for drivers, such as unusual grinding, binding, or clunking noises. Additionally, improper application of the parking brake could lead to a loss of transmission torque to the rear wheels, resulting in unintended rolling.

Addressing the issue

In 2022, Ford attempted to address this issue by updating the powertrain control module software. This update ensures that the electronic parking brake activates when the vehicle is shifted to the park position. Despite this measure, the late September 2023 report presented to the NHTSA revealed that Ford received 396 significant reports of rear axle bolt failures in the affected Explorer SUVs. Among these cases, Ford specified that “less than 5 percent” caused either a roll-in-park or loss of motive power situation.

Recognizing the seriousness of the issue, Ford has created a comprehensive recall program and will begin notifying owners on November 6th. Upon receiving the notification, we strongly urge owners to take immediate action to inspect and repair their vehicles as needed.

Facing a Ford Recall? Follow these steps

In conclusion, Ford remains committed to addressing this issue swiftly and effectively, prioritizing the safety of its valued customers. The company urges affected individuals to stay informed and take necessary steps to ensure their vehicles meet the required safety standards.

As the situation develops, Ford will continue to closely work with the NHTSA to ensure necessary precautions and actions to resolve the issue and prevent any potential safety risks.
