Ford’s Mustang Mach-E: Tesla’s Biggest Rival?

Have you heard the news? Electric vehicles are all the rave. Jokes aside, electric vehicles are making quite a name for themselves in recent years. Tesla, Porsche, Volkswagen, Ford — every major car-maker is honing in on this new age technology in an effort to keep up with consumers’ desire to lead a more sustainable, “green” lifestyle. Gas guzzling is becoming a thing of the past, and with good reason.

With the world’s richest man at its helm, Tesla, among others, is quite arguably best known for putting the electric vehicle on the map. Its line of electric vehicles has quite literally changed the way we view transportation. Ten years ago, nearly every vehicle was operated by non-renewable fossil fuels — gasoline. In 2021, Tesla sold more than 900,000 vehicles. In the first quarter of 2022, Tesla claims to have sold more than 300,000, on track to have its biggest year yet. But, there’s blood in the water…

The competition is silently lurking with Ford’s Mustang Mach-E

In the last part of 2020, Ford’s all-electric, emissions-free “Mach-E” began its popularity among the EV car market. Boasting a full charge of 305 miles with the extended battery option, the Mach-E has officially sold out for the year 2022 as reported by Ford. The Mach-E was the second-best selling electric vehicle in 2021, selling short of the Tesla Model Y. But, its popularity continues to grow, as shown by its reported sell out for the remainder of the year. Of course, supply chain issues have an immediate effect on the production of the batteries (and other parts) of these vehicles, making it more difficult than ever to complete a roundabout production process.

Ford’s Mach-E page states: “Due to high demand, the current model year is no longer available. Limited inventory may be available at select dealers.” This is both good and bad. It’s quite good for the car brand in that there is clearly a high demand for electric vehicles. High demand shows that Ford is producing a solid, consumer-friendly, battery-powered vehicle. The bad part is for that of the consumer. There will be less availability for the car itself, most likely because of the supply chain issues we face worldwide. Global semiconductor shortages along with battery chip shortages are leading EV-makers to increase the pricing of their vehicles, or postpone sales of their EV’s altogether – otherwise, what we’re seeing here with the Ford Mach-E.

Consumers that were once waiting on a Mach-E may turn to Tesla or other EV creators now that the Mach-E is no longer available for the rest of the year. This is great for Tesla, but bad for Ford (obviously). If Tesla is able to keep up with the growing demand and other automakers are not, the EV brand will continue to come out as EV king. As a result, pushing others to the side as the brand grows against necessary and expensive growing pains.

Mustangs will run on

But, Ford’s Mustang Mach-E is far from down and out. As the recipient for the 2022 Consumer Reports’ Top EV pick, bright times are surely ahead. Although orders in the US for 2022 are at a halt for now, the high demand and growing popularity may catapult the EV into the top spot in years to come.
