Is a Porsche Minivan in the Future?

Porsche is a unique luxury brand that isn’t afraid to step outside of its box. From winning sports cars to stylish sedans, then on to the ultimate in luxury SUVs, this brand has crossed all the lines in the automotive world. Well, maybe all but one line – the line of the minivan. However, it appears that Porsche has turned its sights on the soccer moms and the families of multiples with a new model.

A peek at what’s coming for the Porsche minivan

In 2020, Porsche released photos of the concept minivan, which looks like something out of a James Bond movie with the bold red shade and distinct windows. Porsche continues to stretch boundaries of what makes a vehicle right for the buyer.

One of the reasons the Porsche brand has been so successful is because the company doesn’t solve today’s problems; it solves the problems of tomorrow before anyone even realizes there exists such a situation. For example, in the prototype Porsche minivan, the driver’s seat can swivel to look at passengers when the vehicle is in self-driving mode.

Unlike traditional minivans that seat eight or at least seven, this model has seating for six. The back row features bench seating with a lounge feel. The front half of the vehicle includes passenger seats to the right and left of the driver. One side of the minivan offers a large bank of windows while the other side is closed for a cozy feel. The seating is designed for relaxing, talking with others, and working to fit the needs of a wide range of buyers and their ever-changing lifestyles.

Porsche designed the interior using renewable materials. They are also called smart materials because they are unique in the way they function. For instance, some materials can change shapes to fit the occupants while others light up without being illuminated. The goal is to create an emotional connection to the cabin, a place where you enjoy spending time.

Take a step back in time with the Porsche minivan

While this minivan might seem like a radical departure for Porsche, fans of the brand may remember hearing about the Porsche B32. This model was a partnership with Volkswagen where the two companies built a limited number of racing support vans.

Of course, this model isn’t just inspired by a single concept. It also takes cues from the legendary McLaren F1. The first row includes just the driver seat, positioned in the middle. The second row features two captain’s chairs while the third-row bench seat offers room for three.

Inspired by the future

Along with a trip back in time, Porsche also drew from the best of today and the future with a curved windshield which wraps around like the 1950s-esq look. Each passenger in the second row gets their own screen while the digital cluster looks like something you would see in a Porsche minivan.

Can minivans make a comeback?

A decade ago, minivans were the family vehicle, seen all along the highways. Anyone with a couple of kids was looking at this segment to find the right model for their needs. Then, the SUVs began to change to accommodate families, offering premium amenities that were once limited to the minivan.

Pretty soon, families were flocking to the family SUV. Taking their rightful oath as the cool neighbors in the neighborhood as the minivan fell out of favor. It became more of an insult to be labeled a minivan family. However, the Porsche version of the minivan is one that has never been seen. This model could be the beginning of a minivan comeback. But, who would have thought it would be Porsche leading the way?
