Lucid Air Officially Named MotorTrend Car Of The Year

MotorTrend has officially announced their choice for 2022 Car of the Year. Give a round of applause for the 2022 Lucid Air, an electric luxury vehicle that has just recently gone into production. This level of prestige is usually reserved for models that are new to the automotive market or have been completely redesigned. Per example, last year’s winner, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. However, this year’s announcement brings something new to the competition. It is the first time an automaker has won MotorTrend Car of the Year with its very first model.

Read on to learn all about Lucid Air and why MotorTrend picked this high-cost electric vehicle over other contenders.

The unveiling of Lucid Air

The Air went up against a diverse group of 25 competitors. Of which came to a final five, including the Mercedes-Benz EQS, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Hyundai Sonata and Honda Civic. Although widely disparate in price, the judges had their eye on value. The Lucid Air simply won them over for performance and efficiency in the luxury domain. On top of that, the judges lauded the craftsmanship of the California electric start-up.

This is in particular reference to their Lucid-based electric motor and stereo-system. Other key features that make the Lucid Air a top contender include:

  • Up to 520 miles on a single charge with EPA rating
  • LED headlights
  • Four high resolution screens
  • Large interior cabin
  • Ample cargo space

Although the Lucid Air has not been tested by the IIHS, this model is loaded with high-tech safety features and driver assist technologies. The same state-of-the-art technologies that accrue award-worthy mention in other top models. The judges felt confident the safety of the Lucid Air would speak for itself.

The new standard of EV

With electric mobility expanding vastly in all areas of transportation, consumers are starting to see the full spectrum of what an electric vehicle can offer. They aren’t always tiny. They don’t have to be a hatchback. And they certainly don’t have to have short range spans. The Lucid Air knocks all these assumptions out of the park. It redefines the future of luxury EVs.

MotorTrend was bold enough to describe the Air as “the new benchmark” of electric vehicles. With in-house production at the core of its brand, it’s clear every finite detail was taken into consideration. The judges praised the Lucid Motors team, even making mention that other established automakers should be worried.

Overall, the Lucid Air delivers an elevated driving experience for both the driver and passengers to enjoy. Its current price tag packs a mighty punch, offered at $140,000 starting price. Therefore, we’ll have to wait some time for the less expensive alternatives to hit the automotive market.

Final thoughts on the 2022 Lucid Air

The Car of the Year award takes into account efficiency, value, design, engineering, and safety.
