What Everyone Ought to Know About the 2022 Mercedes SL AMG

Did you know that “SL” comes from the German phrase, “Sport Leicht”, or, “Sport Light”? When you speak to a Mercedes Benz car connoisseur, they probably will know a good bit of history about the classic “SL” vehicle lineup. Some are even collectors of the car, which dates back to its origination as a Grand Prix racing car in 1952. At first, Mercedes had no plans to include a street legal version, until the car became a delighted favorite among the rich. During the economic boom of a post-WWII America, the car came into production in 1954 showcased as a “300 SL” model.

For many, many years, the SL’s popularity remained the same. Its sales were high, as were its ranking among car critics. Its iconic past and sporty looks have helped it keep its place in the Mercedes Benz lineup for more than 70 years and counting. And, this year, Mercedes hopes to whew its loyal customers and win over others with the SL’s redesigned interior, exterior, and powertrain specs. A classic has been reborn.

An All-AMG model lineup with a price to show

The new generation of the SL roadster has been revealed to be available in two different models, both of which are handcrafted by Benz’s ultra-performance AMG label: the SL55 AMG and the SL63 AMG. The “AMG” tag denotes the highest performing, most luxurious car that Mercedes Benz offers its customers. Each AMG model’s engine is hand-crafted in the AMG facility in Affalterbach, Germany. The SL55 AMG debuts its starting price at $138,850, while the heftier SL63 AMG boasts a starting price of $179,150. We expect Mercedes Benz to SL to offer stellar performance at this new heightened price range.

A need for speed… and lots of tech

Both of the models come with a 4.0 Liter, Twin Turbo, V8 engine; the SL55 outputs approximately 469 horsepower, while the faster SL63 model will produce an estimated 577 horsepower. For all you speed lovers out there: that’s a lot of horsepower. All-wheel drive comes standard on both models, as well as a nine-speed automatic transmission. As for the interior – it’s a tech-lovers dream, with all the luxury you’d come to expect from one of the world’s most distinguished auto makers. There’s a huge touch screen LED info-tainment center in the dash, along with an updated digital speedometer and data logs. The interior’s trim provides its consumer with a healthy mix of ultra sport and ultra luxury, with custom options offered throughout.

Delivering the emotional experience of fun in the Mercedes SL

The exterior of the new SL models is strikingly… well… new! It’s got a totally redesigned body, yet still with that classic “you know it’s a Mercedes when you look at it” look. The headlights and taillights follow in the footsteps of its sister models, the S and C class, as being more triangular in nature, giving off a “meaner,” more aggressive look than previous models. Mercedes is hoping to keep its loyal buyers intrigued by the new design, and Alex Edwards, President of Strategic Vision, an automotive research and consulting firm, thinks the car-maker is right on track. Alex says that “according to our 2021 Total Quality research study, the SL has a literal perfect score on delivering the emotional experience of fun.”

At the end of the day, for any new car buyer, isn’t that what life’s all about? We have a feeling that the new SL will have no problem helping out its new drivers experience some fun.
