The Best Spring Road Trips to Take If You Love Wildflowers

Road trips are one of the best ways to spend a long weekend or even just a few hours with yourself and your loved ones. And as the weather continues to warm up, there are so many opportunities to get out of the house and experience the joys and beauty of the nature around us. If you’re a fan of wildflowers in particular, there are a few spring road trips that you absolutely have to take at least once in your lifetime. Today, we’ll highlight some of the best road trips you can take if you’re a wildflower enthusiast.

George Washington Memorial Parkway makes for memorable spring road trips

If you’re itching to get out of the DC area but don’t want to have to drive too far, you should definitely give the GW Memorial Parkway a shot. The full drive will take you through both Virginia and Maryland, winding around the scenic Potomac and giving you plenty of opportunities to view gorgeous wildflowers along the road.

Crested Butte, CO

They don’t call it the “wildflower capital of Colorado” for nothing! This city takes its wildflowers seriously. Go for a scenic drive around the hills, or stop to celebrate the annual wildflower festival in early July! Just don’t forget to bring a camera to document the amazing sights!

Spring road trips on Skyline Drive

If you’re looking for beautiful vistas, Skyline Drive features 75 different overlooks where you can take in the natural wonder of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Along the way, this route will take you through Shenandoah National Park, where you’ll be greeted by scores of violets, azaleas, and dogwoods.

Newfound Gap Road

Also known as US Highway 441, this two-lane roadway crosses through the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina. While this drive has something to offer throughout the year, it’s particular beautiful in late spring, when wildflowers, including the rare purple Catawba rhododendrons are in bloom.

Glacier National Park, MT

Over a thousand species of wildflower thrive within the lowlands and slopes of Glacier National Park, meaning you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see some buds if you manage to take a trip up this way. Along with wildflower spotting, this park is also a great place to bike, kayak, and take a day hike!
