What Will the Future of EV Fleets Look Like?

Over the past 5 years or so, we’ve seen EVs become much more widely adopted, both in the US and abroad. Thanks to tax benefits, more affordable options, and a growing awareness around the need to shift from gas to renewable energy, many drivers have swapped their gas-guzzlers for electric vehicles. But in the fight to cut emissions, changing what kind of cars individuals and families drive is only part of the solution. That’s why brands and organizations like the USPS are pivoting toward EV fleets to bring packages and parcels to consumers in a more sustainable way.

Many companies have already made this transition, or are currently in the process of transitioning from gas to electric power. Here’s more details on how this transition is shaping the following industries.

Trucking and EV fleets

Companies like Merchants Fleet and organizations such as the Electrification Coalition are working with cities and municipalities to help light, medium, and heavy-duty truck fleets transition to EVs

By facilitating this shift, organizations like these could help remove millions of tons of emissions from our roads and air, helping slow the acceleration of climate change and bring us closer to our goal of hitting net-zero emissions.

The postage factor

Just recently, the USPS announced that it would begin transitioning it’s fleet of delivery vans to EVs. Back in February, the postal service made the decision to award a $482 million contract to Oshkosh Defense for the Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) to facilitate that transition. However, currently only 10% of their new mail vans will be electric, prompting some legislators to call for inquiries into the decision. In response, the USPS said it would like to see that number increase, but would need more funding from Washington to make it happen.

Logistics providers in EV fleets

As eCommerce continues to grow, there is more demand for fast and efficient shipping and delivery. We’ve started to see many brands working with logistics providers to create more sustainable delivery methods, including electrifying UPS and FedEx fleets for example. Within the next 10 years, you may be getting your deliveries made by driverless EV cars, along with drones and delivery robots.
