Why should I choose the 2021 Buick Encore?

The 2021 Buick Encore is a reliable subcompact crossover SUV. It makes for an easy drive and can comfortably fit five people. It also allows for a quiet ride on the highway. For small families that like to travel or ride comfortably to regular family events, the 2021 subcompact is certainly worth consideration.

What are the drawbacks of the 2021 Buick Encore?

The fuel economy for the 2021 Buick Encore is underwhelming. There are also complaints about the slow and underwhelming acceleration capabilities. While there is some cargo space, it is hardly enough for longer family vacations. Buick also did not add any notable features to the 2020 version which was seen as not having many bells and whistles.

What models are the most notable competitors?

The most notable rivals to the Encore are the Mazda CX-30, Kia Soul, Hyundai Kona, Hyundai Venue and the Kia Seltos. Here is how the 2021 Buick Encore compares with these models.

2021 Buick Encore vs. Mazda CX-30

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 received a 9.5/10 rating from Car and Driver, compared to a 6.5/10 for the 2021 Buick Encore. Although similarly priced, the Mazda CX-30 offers more of a luxury feel than the Buick Encore. The power and performance of the CX-30 are not overwhelming, and are similar to the performance of the Buick Encore.

2021 Buick Encore vs. Kia Soul

The 2021 Kia Soul received an 8.5/10 rating from Car and Driver. The Kia Soul is also more affordable, starting at $18,765. The style for the Soul is non-traditional, which some may prefer while others may not appreciate. There are concerns with the backseats not laying down flat, and it is not as fuel-efficient as the Buick Encore.

2021 Buick Encore vs. Hyundai Kona

The 2021 Hyundai Kona received a 9/10 rating from Car and Driver. Car and Driver’s listed “highs” of the Hyundai Kona are the cheeky design, ample amount of standard features and the high-quality turbo engine that is offered. The cargo space, however, leaves a lot to be desired and there have been reports of issues with the ease of steering as well.

How is the fuel economy?

The 2021 Buick Encore offers relatively average fuel economy among competitor subcompact crossover SUVs. While the final data is not yet released, the EPA-estimated miles per gallon for the 2021 model is 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg highway. The all-wheel-drive Encore features 24 and 29 mpg.

What about the Interior & infotainment features?

The 2021 Encore has an ample amount of tech systems and gadgets. In addition to the eight-inch touchscreen infotainment display that offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, onboard wifi and more, the Encore offers a six-speaker audio system with Sirius XM satellite radio and Bluetooth connectivity.

Is the 2021 Buick Encore comfortable?

The 2021 model offers soft and comfortable seats with padded armrests. The design of the interior seating resembles that of a luxury vehicle. It also has a fair amount of storage space for families as well. However, some of the reviews express concerns that the rear seats are difficult to fold.

What are the safety features like?

The 2021 Buick Encore has advanced safety features and has tasted well crash tests. According to the crash tests of the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2021 Buick scored the following:

  • Side impact test: Good
  • Roof strength test: Good
  • Rear crash protection/head restraint: Good
  • Moderate overlap front test: Good

The Encore also offers a blind-spot warning system, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and OnStar. OnStar provides services such as roadside assistance and automatic crash notification.  While the Encore tests relatively well with the IIHS, the reviews are mixed with other agencies, and there are concerns about the Encore’s backseat not being ideal for children in safety seats.

What are the pricing options for the Encore?

There are only two pricing options for the 2021 Buick Encore with some upgraded feature options for buyers to consider. The two options are basic and preferred. The starting price for the basic model is $24,195. The preferred model starts at $25,595.

Our recommendation

The subcompact is ideal for small families or couples who travel due to its quiet and comfortable nature. However, there are notable concerns about its safety for younger children and the storage and seating space may become an issue for larger families. Overall, the 2021 Buick Encore is a quality option for those who are considering a small compact SUV, but understanding the concerns and comparing the Encore with other options is encouraged before purchasing.
