All The Details on the New Volkswagen ID Buzz EV

Volkswagen has been hard at work reinventing their Transporter Van (models T1-T3) to fit into the modern day electric vehicle market. Curious customers have been buzzing about what the new vehicle is going to look like and when it will become available in different countries. Volkswagen has released galleries for both the exterior and interior of the ID Buzz Electric Bus but the images are from the European model, as the model made for the U.S. is not yet available.

When can you get your hands on the ID Buzz Electric Bus?

If you live in a European country, and especially if you’re in Germany, the pre-sales of the new ID Buzz and ID Buzz cargo will begin Friday, May 20th of this year. This will allow the bus to be ordered for any sort of consumer ranging from families to businesses and corporate companies. To celebrate the release of its new electric bus, Volkswagen put together a documentary detailing its creation. The ID Buzz includes many of the same design details announced in the 2017 concept of the vehicle–drawing on similar features of the T1 and T2 models, so that the ID Buzz will resemble much of what consumers love about the original VW van. ID Buzz deliveries will begin in Europe before the end of 2022.

American consumers, however, have to wait until 2024 to get their hands on the ID Buzz Electric Bus. We know what you’re thinking. Another two years? Trust us, we don’t want to wait that long either. But the model being created for the U.S. market is looking like it’ll be worth the wait. This Buzz will be bigger, featuring a longer-wheelbase and three rows of seating rather than the two-row released in Europe, which is made in Hanover, Germany. This vehicle is said to fit seven passengers.

What type of batteries are used?

Both the U.S. and European versions of the van will use the same 82-kWh battery pack as featured in the Volkswagen ID4 electric crossover. This system gives the bus 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque. A top speed of 90 mph is said to come from the European ID Buzz. Since the American-spec ID Buzz will be a larger vehicle, we expect a larger battery pack option. In addition, more power coming from the dual-motor AWD version. Volkswagen has not announced if consumers will have a choice in batteries, or if AWD will be standard for the larger bus.

Some features to look out for

First, the design of the ID Buzz is still retro, just with a modern take. The body is sleek and features trendy tail lights across the back. The two-tone color scheme is old-school in philosophy but has a modern execution. It gives the bus a fun feel while still being clean and classy. The ID Buzz also looks like a bus but it’s actually a car. It runs on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) platform, with a 12-module, floor-mounted battery. In general, the ID Buzz should be able to handle its weight very well.

Volkswagen is definitely hitting the mark on sustainability with this model as well. The ID Buzz is completely free of animal-sourced leather and uses more eco-friendly materials instead. The automaker is still opting for the best quality materials. The material used to upholster the steering wheel “looks just as high quality as leather and provides a similar feel”, according to VW reps. Volkswagen wants this model to hit all the quality standards that they achieve for their other vehicles. Additionally, the seat covers, roof liner, and floor coverings are all made from recycled materials.

Top-of-the-line safety

This Volkswagen model will also feature smart safety technology. Just like VW’s other vehicles, the electric bus will include Front Assist, Lane Assist,  Dynamic Road Sign Display, Side Assist, Travel Assist, Emergency, Assist, Park Assist, Light Assist, Area View, and adaptive cruise control. Not only that, but the ID Buzz will feature ID Light. This technology is an LED strip in the dashboard that illuminates various colors and flows in different directions to communicate with the driver via their peripheral vision, allowing their eyes to stay on the road.

Overall, the Volkswagen ID Buzz is something to look forward to. It’s an electrical vehicle that is not only a trusty vehicle but also a positive environmental advocate. It will be a car consumers feel good to have in their garage.
