In the 1960s, slot car racing became extremely popular. Racing clubs appeared worldwide, and fans competed in races. Toy stores sold these cars, and kids raced them on tracks at home, making it a widely loved hobby. In the 1970s, slot car racing started to lose its appeal.
Seen as outdated, the cars were overshadowed by new toys and video games. Many slot car racing clubs shut down, and the tracks disappeared as interest faded. In the 1990s, slot cars started to regain popularity. Advancements in technology made cars quicker and more lifelike.

Custom County Course: Jarel Built Slot Car Tracks
Mark Jarel’s custom slot car tracks are more than just toys; they are miniature masterpieces. Inspired by legendary motorsport venues from around the globe, he combines these elements into unique scenes that feel both fresh and nostalgic. What starts as a simple particle board and a rough design transforms into an intricate racing experience.
Growing up in a family with a background in cabinetry, Mark developed a strong sense of woodworking and a DIY attitude early on. Although he always had a passion for racing, it wasn’t until his son discovered a box of vintage slot cars that Mark’s enthusiasm for creating custom tracks truly sparked.

Rustic Hill Slot Car Track – Scatto Design
Our next spotlight is on a stunning slot car track crafted by Scatto Design. Spanning an impressive 17 x 7 feet, this custom layout boasts a thrilling mix of sharp turns, cleverly positioned crossovers, and straightaways perfect for hitting maximum speed. Every aspect has been meticulously designed, featuring rocky cliffs, tiny spectators, and even a functioning windmill nestled in one corner.
The true magic of this track comes to life after dark. With an array of streetlights and the slot cars’ own headlights illuminating the scene, racing at night transforms into a spectacular experience unlike any other!

Thatcher’s Raceway – Jadlam Racing Models
This exhilarating layout features sharp S-turns, dark tunnels, and a bustling pit row, ensuring an exciting racing experience for all. The meticulous attention to detail is extraordinary, showcasing tiny camera crews, graffiti artists, and even welding sparks emanating from one of the garages. Although much of the track is custom-built or significantly modified, you’ll spot familiar Scalextric slot car components throughout the design.
From vibrant bars and spectator stands to bathrooms and medical facilities, many of these structures come alive with lights for some thrilling night racing. And while the track is home to various cars, trucks, and emergency vehicles, it’s far from ordinary. Your creativity can soar with the addition of a helicopter, hot air balloon, and suspended fighter jets overhead!

Custom AFX Giant Raceway – Blue Ridge Racing
This custom HO-scale slot car track was crafted by Chris, whose journey into the world of slot car racing began in January 2022. After finding himself bored at home during the pandemic, he discovered this thrilling hobby. A visit to a local hobby shop and some online research led him to acquire the AFX Giant Raceway, an impressive 62.5 ft. mega track.
Using the AFX Giant Raceway as his foundation and repurposing an old billiards table as the base, Chris set to work on his custom course. Over the next seven months, he enhanced his raceway with grass, trees, structures, and various scenic elements. What truly sets this track apart is the incorporation of real rocks, which Chris collected from his backyard in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Northern Georgia.

Byron Rally – Bespoke Track
This custom, 17 ft. x 8 ft. Scalextric track is loosely based on the scenic, winding country roads of Southern France and Italy. Originally only 10 ft. in length, the designers at Bespoke Trax wisely tacked on a huge 7 ft. addition that included the iconic quarry scene and a long back straight for really laying on the gas.
This one-of-a-kind track has more dark tunnels, hairpin turns, and sheer elevation than most of the other tracks on this list. And the best part is, for the right price, this jaw-dropping custom slot car track can be yours!

Dearborn Basement Slot Car Track – Jimmy Attard
Last but certainly not least, we have an enormous 1,050 sq. ft. custom slot car track crafted by Jimmy Attard from Dearborn, MI. Once hailed as “the premier track in America” by a renowned toy car magazine, this impressive creation has come a long way in the past thirteen years. However, Jimmy insists it’s still “far from complete.”
Every aspect of Jimmy’s track is handmade, utilizing a variety of simple materials from his own yard, including sand and gravel, as well as everyday items like coat hangers and coffee stirrers. Astonishingly, he claims to have spent less than $300 on the entire project! This achievement is even more remarkable when you consider that the entire track can be illuminated for spectacular nighttime racing, thanks to the clever use of red, yellow, and green LEGO pieces.
