Who is EricTheCarGuy?

Some car enthusiasts have a passion for speed. They love nothing more than going full throttle in an iconic muscle car. Others, are merely die-hard collectors. They’ll gather at any and every car auction to gawk over restored classic models. And possibly, even bring one home. But for Eric Cook, he’s the master of mechanics.

Before he could earn this title, Eric’s career started quite differently than one would expect of a car enthusiast. During his teens, Cook found an avid interest in drawing, painting, and sculpting, which later influenced his studies in college. After dropping out of school, landing a painting gig in Philadelphia, and countless jobs after that, the life of a struggling artist had finally caught up to him. Cook desired stability.

One day Eric opened the phone book and began searching for trade schools that would guarantee a full-time job. And so, his time began at the Rosedale Technical Institute to become an automotive technician. At the time, Cook had already spent several years working on his own vehicle as well as friends, so it seemed like a natural fit. He was not an expert, by any means, but knew he could refine his craft and make a living off a lifelong interest.

After graduating the 18 month program, Cook haply stepped into his new career. He worked at an Acura dealership for the better half of 8 years, which allowed him to fine-tune his mechanical skills and learn the in’s and out’s of working in a garage. Though his passion for mechanics carried him through the early stages of his career, burnout was inevitable. During the trials of the 2008 recession, Cook found himself in desperate need of a new hobby, which turned out to be video production.

It’s around this time that that his wife inspired him to merge his two passions into one — making videos about fixing cars. EricTheCarGuy was shortly born thereafter; his greatest masterpiece to date.

A channel for all your car-related problems

Over the last decade, Cook has cultivated one of the most useful YouTube channels on the platform. EricTheCarGuy teaches viewers everything and anything you need to know about maintaining and fixing up a vehicle. From taking apart an engine, learning how to repair a key lock, to even diagnosing common car problems.

It’s through his step-by-step instructions and visuals that millions of drivers have found solutions to their car-related problems. With nearly 1.68 million subscribers today, his videos have amassed a large following, largely due to Cook’s friendly demeanor. He hoped his YouTube channel would be more like getting help from a friend, rather than a paid professional. His success thus far is a true testament to his efforts.
