Google Maps Introduces New Eco-Friendly Routing Option

Getting lost is a lot less maddening when you have Google Maps on your side.

The reliable mapping platform has become a favorite among drivers, specifically for its responsiveness and user-friendly features. It also boosts exceptional accessibility to local businesses, which makes finding your next lunch spot a breeze. It’s the closest thing to a built-in navigation in your car, but even better. You can orchestrate a clear vantage point of where you’ll travel with features like Street View and satellite imaging.

Now Google Maps has entered a new domain. A recent update to its Android and iOS apps, know officially as eco-friendly routing, allows users to lessen their carbon footprint while driving, biking, or scootering. This greener way of traveling should already be a feature on your Google Maps with the latest software update.

What is eco-friendly routing?

When you type in a destination on Google Maps, it will typically offer you multiple routes to that location. These routes often range from the fastest to the slowest, including whether or not there are transportation fees involved. As the user, it is your decision to choose which route is more favorable. Hit start, and you’re ready to go.

With the addition of eco-friendly routing, drivers will have another suggested route on their screen. It might not be the fastest option, but it will give conscious drivers the power to save on fuel and cut down emissions. The eco route is most distinguishable by the green leaf image as seen below.

This was all made happen with the use of artificial intelligence and key information from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Together, using those two resources, Google has successfully integrated a new routing system that benefits both the driver and the earth.

How will Google Maps eco-friendly routing entice drivers?

While the execution is brilliant, the question remains how many drivers will actually utilize this new routing option. Generally speaking, most users are looking for the fastest route. When you’re in a crunch to get to work on time, the eco route might not fall into plan.

However, Google did make mention that sometimes the fastest route will be the most efficient, making it a win/win scenario. But this will not always be the case. Google is hoping that the incentive to cut down on fuel costs will encourage more drivers to choose the eco-friendly route. Maybe that means setting aside a little more time for your commute to work or school.

Leading with this thought process, Google hopes the greener option will appeal to more drivers than expected. The rising gas prices nationwide should be reason enough for drivers to start switching to the eco-friendly option in 2o21.

Other Android and iOS upgrades

Google’s recent announcement on eco-friendly routing also mentioned the reveal of two other sustainable upgrades: the lite navigation for cyclists and bike and scooter share information. With the lite navigation, bikers can keep track of where they’re going without turn-by-turn directions. Essentially, this will help give cyclists a guided route and a way to track their trip.

The bike and scooter share information feature allows users to locate available rideshare stations and even see how many bikes or scooters are available. So far, Google has initiated this iOS and Android feature in places like Berlin, Taipei, and major cities worldwide with major success.

Sustainability is on the mind with Google Maps

Google Maps is ranked the world’s most popular navigation app. Both users and businesses trust in its efficacy and willingness to get them from point A to point B without difficulty. Whether you’re heading to a new location or looking to avoid traffic, Google Maps knows the right way to go.

With the addition of more sustainable features like eco-friendly routing, lite navigation for cyclists, and bike and scooter share information, users can enjoy the same features they love about the mapping platform with a more conscious mindset.

Google claims if drivers use eco-friendly routing, it could prevent over 1 million tons of carbon emissions per year. Just think of the impact that could make on our carbon footprint. Next time you open Google Maps, you just might consider driving the eco-friendly way.

    1. I would definitely use this feature the next time I am on a road trip.

    2. I noticed this the other day in the Google Maps app. Interesting to see Google take steps in promoting environmental awareness. I wonder if more companies will take steps to promote this social and environmental concerns.
