Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Wagon Prototype Stuns

I’m a big fan of wagons, as evidenced by my infatuation with cars like the Audi A4 Allroad and Subaru Outback (but not so much the Ford Fusion Active, which looks like it’s trying too hard). Now, Porsche is redesigning the Taycan to be much, much more than it once was. After introducing the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, drivers across the globe are looking for a taste.

Highlights from the prototype reveal

According to Stefan Weckpack, Vice President of the Taycan product line, Porsche wanted to offer a variant of the Taycan consumers already knew. In its original form, the Taycan is a tight, sporty fit. The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo wagon adds some space for drivers who seek it.

Because of this space, it’s a more flexible drive. Having a family or lots of gear won’t necessarily eliminate the wagon from your prospective lineup.

Weckpack says the cross turismo variant delivers an entirely new roofline that comes standard with roof rails. It’s more apt for active drivers, regardless of whether they’re putzing around the city or cruising through the countryside.

In the same vein, the vehicle includes boosted off-road clearance metrics and an optimized suspension system. Porsche calls it a crossover utility vehicle (CUV), and the CUV driving mode labels this title loud and clear.

Weckpack said he’d even go for the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo over the original Taycan, mostly because he likes to go mountain biking on a regular basis and requires the space to stow his gear. (It’s always a good thing when a vehicle’s engineer enjoys the ride in their personal lives.)

Lighting on the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo wagon

For the most recent generation of the Taycan sedan, headlights and taillights came straight from the Mission E concept. That means the lighting you see on the cross turismo variant today is likely to be the final form by the time the ride is up for production.

Normalizing electrification in the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo

The Porsche Taycan wagon doesn’t look like your typical EV. However, it does maintain an electric drivetrain through and through. This drivetrain is likely to come from the Taycan sedan.

Unlike the rear-wheel drive sedan, the cross turismo will likely be equipped with a standard all-wheel drivetrain. This makes sense considering the active lifestyle this vehicle is courting. Another one of Porsche’s wagons, the Panamera Sport Turismo wagon, also uses all-wheel drive.

Considering the wagon is weightier than the sedan, the electric driving range may be affected. Currently, the Taycan sedan hits a maximum 227-mile range, a number that’s been verified by the EPA.

The real question: What’s the power?

Despite its prototype status, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is likely to inherit the dual-motor configuration that’s found in the Taycan 4S. This could mean upwards of 522 horsepower (or even as much as 750 horses depending on which trim you opt for). A 71–83.7 kWh battery pack should do the trick.

Bottom line

All in all, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Wagon may be in prototype mode, but it looks rather ready for the road ahead.
