Sports Cars On A Budget — What Can I Afford?

Driving in the fast lane is an honest pursuit of many auto enthusiasts. However, once the actual cost of owning a sports cars sets in, it deters a number of drivers from going full speed ahead. Instead, you’re left dreaming of those supercars and settling for something less than spectacular. If this mindset has carried you through car ownership over the years, we’re here to tell you there are some pretty impressive sports cars you can find on a budget. Some are even iconic.

These models might not share the same glamor or hype as a McLaren or Ferrari, but they are some of the best options for car enthusiasts looking for low-costs. Whether you plan on buying new or used, these models should stay at the top of your list.

Here are some of our favorite affordable sports cars.

Mazda Miata MX-5

The Miata embodies Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom trademark. It’s small but mighty, and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. This sports car offers six speed manual or automatic transmission, which is an option car enthusiasts vie for. With three trims and intriguing package upgrades, the price of ownership can shift from $26,830 to $35,520.

We recommend upgrading to the Brembo/BBS Recaro package. This includes Brembo front brakes, sports seats, and BBS forged aluminum wheels for an overall sportier aesthetic for your Miata.

Toyota GR 86

Toyota engineering is powered by ingenuity. It’s collaboration with Subaru to engineer the 2022 GR86 does not disappoint. If you’re in the market for a sports car that’s unique and fun to drive, the GR86 model is your best choice. The base trim has a starting MSRP of $27,700, while the Premium trim comes in at $30,000. For the extra money you get color-keyed duckbill rear spoiler and two-stage heated sport seats with leather trim.

If you ask us — why not go all out? Not to mention, the Premium trim offers an adaptive front lighting system (AFS) that directs low beam headlights in the direction that the vehicle turns.

Chevrolet Camaro

Back in its heyday, the Camaro was an automotive marvel. With the 1969 edition and its innovative block engine, this American sports car could reach up to 430 horsepower. With performance like that, it’s still one of the most sought-after muscle cars on the market. These days, that level of performance is still matched even though its consumer value has simmered down.

That said, its seven trim options make this a great choice for drivers needing to keep things affordable. The base trim starts at $25,000, but if you want the true sports car experience we suggest upgrading to the SS or ZL1 trims.

Ford Mustang

We can’t quite complete this list without mentioning one of the greats. For affordability, the EcoBoost trim is your best shot at driving this acclaimed sports car while staying within budget. It’s 2.3 liter 4 cylinder engine with 310 horsepower is worthy of its price tag. This model will leave any auto enthusiast feeling satisfied.

Consider looking at 2020-2021 used models for a better deal. You just might be able to find a GT or GT Premium trim at a price point that matches your budget this year.

Overview of sports cars on a budget

Just because you have a set budget in place does not mean you have to miss out on the fun. Driving a sports car is a memorable experience, one that many wish could last a lifetime. Though they don’t make the best family vehicles or offer the long-standing reliability, we still love them. As you journey on your next car search, keep these awesome sports cars in mind.

    1. A 2022 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 Manual Coupe is $34,000 and makes 455 hp @ 6,000 rpm with a 6.2 L V8. That is about as good of a deal for the amount of power you can get right now.
