What Vehicles Will Not Return in 2022?

It’s safe to say that not every make or model is meant to last a lifetime. Some exit the market so quickly that we can barely keep tabs on their existence. We often call these the automotive flops, the cars that nobody seems to want. Whether a vehicle enjoys a short and sweet existence or carries on a decades-long legacy, you’ll never truly know when a model will fall out of style. It just so happens that next year we’ll be biding adieu to a surprising number of vehicles, many of which drivers have clung to over the years. Check out which vehicles will not return to the automotive market in 2022.

BMW i3

The BMW i3 was originally one of the most recognizable electric models on the market. Let’s just say its design was emblematic of what automakers thought electromobility had to be at the time. The high-roof hatchback. The distinctive interior features. The BMW i3 was quite a sight, only reaching a range of 153 mile range. Compared to electric vehicles these days, the i3 is seriously lacking. Though BMW will continue production in other countries, this vehicle will not return in the United States. Instead, the i4 and iX sport utility vehicle shall take its respective place.

Hyundai Veloster

We once ranked the Hyundai Veloster as one of the best purchases under $20,000. Apart from the low MSRP, consumers love the sporty appearance and standard safety and car tech. However, tastes have drastically changed. Drivers are more interested in crossovers and SUV options at comparable prices rather than a small hatchback model. 2022 will be the kiss of death for this budget-friendly option in all trims except the Veloster N.

Honda Clarity

Everyone knows the same Honda sedans that consumers rave about. Both the Civic and Accord win the affection of automotive experts and drivers alike. But what you might not know is there is another sedan amongst the Honda lineup that has failed to stand out. The Honda Clarity never quite made its claim to fame due to poor sales and a lackluster interest in its hydrogen fuel economy. Last year the production of its EV came to a halt as well. Honda doesn’t mess up often, but the Clarity was surely a miss.

Mazda CX-3

This subcompact SUV entered the automotive market with its 2016 model. It has since fallen under the shadows of other Mazda counterparts, particularly the Mazda CX-5 and CX-30. After undergoing two generations in a short period of time, sales did not improve. In truth, the CX-3’s small cabin space could not compete with others. Now it’s officially making its exit for good.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

There is no shortage of vehicles among the Mercedes-Benz lineup. With up to 16 models available, just about every buyer can find what they’re looking for in this luxury manufacture. However, as production cutbacks have paved a grave reality for automakers, some have chosen to part ways with less desirable models. Enter: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. There’s nothing specifically wrong with this high-class sedan, but other Mercedes-Benz vehicles supersede as priority.

Toyota Land Cruiser

The Land Cruiser is one of Toyota’s most nostalgic models. It’s been in production since the late 1950’s and has remained one of the most sought-after SUV models on the market. As of recently, the stiff competition in sport utility vehicles has taken the limelight off this iconic ride. On top of that, the repugnant cost of the Land Cruiser has turned away many interested buyers. This models MSRP peaked all the way up to $85,665 in 2021. Thus, well above other luxury models.

Mazda 6

It’s time for another Mazda to exit the automotive scene. Sadly, this one has been a loyal favorite of Mazda fanatics for years. The Mazda 6 originated in 2002 but experienced a rebirth in popularity after its third generation reveal. Consumers flocked to this model for its reliability, but mostly because it provided a sleek interior cabin more reminiscent of luxury models. The cold hard truth is sedans are no longer in style, which is why the Mazda 6 is taking a break from production in 2022.

Final farewell to the vehicles who will not return in 2022

The previously mentioned models are set to bite the dust with their 2021 model year. That said, there is still some hope that a few will make a triumph return. I mean, an automotive market without a Toyota Land Cruiser, one of the most enigmatic off-road vehicles, just doesn’t seem right. It’s more likely though that automakers will reinvent these dying breeds. Taking a little bit of what made them good and incorporating a new approach. One that fully coincides with consumer interests and the ongoing transition to electromobility. After all, there’s not much sense in producing a make or model that doesn’t satisfy the modern driver.
