Nissan Recalls 800,000+ Sentra Sedans for Brake Light Malfunction

As headlight and brake light enthusiasts, we like to report on the latest trends and impairments in the automotive industry. This week, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced an official recall on the Nissan Sentra regarding faulty brake lights.

The Sentra has long been appreciated for being a more economical drive on the market, seen mostly as a midline option for Nissan drivers. As of recent, its upgraded appearance has taken this Nissan from ordinary sedan to a sporty and sophisticated counterpart, more reminiscent of the popular Altima and Maxima models.

Just one look at its striking headlight design, and you know this sedan is here to attract a new generation of buyers:

With such buzz over its latest release, the news of the Nissan Sentra recall has garnered some concern. It’s important to note the recall only pertains to 2016–2019 Sentra sedans so not every driver will be affected by this brake light issue.

Find out more about the Nissan Sentra recall, including the projected timeline for fixing this brake light malfunction.

Breaking down the brake light issue

According to reports, when Sentra drivers hit the brake pedal, the brake light does not always illuminate. This creates a pragmatic problem concerning safety for Sentra owners and the drivers around them.

The brake light is essential for warning other drivers that speed is decreasing or your vehicle is coming to a complete stop. With this issue reaching over 800,000 vehicles, it’s evident the brake light malfunction has continued to worsen over a four year span.

Its problem stems from a silicone-based grease that causes a residue buildup on the surface of the switch, resulting in the Sentra’s brake lights to perform inconsistently. Nissan Sentra drivers will require a new protective grommet to be installed to resolve this issue.

While every driver plans to drive a dependable auto, recalls happen yearly to a range of manufacturers. Just recently, Kia recalled over 380,000 vehicles for a potential fire risk. Bottom line: while manufacturers strive for perfection, the recalls happen more often than you think to adjust for any mishaps that occured post production.

Estimated timeline for Nissan Sentra drivers

The Sentra recall will take some time to remedy. According to Nissan, Sentra drivers will receive an official notice regarding the brake light malfunction come April. However, the appropriate parts to resolve these brake light concerns are projected to arrive by fall. This means, Nissan Sentra drivers could be facing months with this recurring issue, and should stay cautious while on the road to avoid potential road hazards

For Nissan Sentra drivers, it is vital to take this recall seriously. It is best suggested to look out for updates on the NHTSA website. Once the parts have arrived, schedule an appointment at your local Nissan dealership and take the initiative towards better brake light safety.
