2021 Honda CR-V vs. 2021 GMC Terrain

It’s time for a little friendly competition between a classic Americana brand and a Japanese powerhouse. Together, GMC and Honda produce some of the most notable SUVs on the market, making these brands the perfect match for a comparison report. Let’s look at the 2021 Honda CR-V vs. 2021 GMC Terrain.

We know searching for the ideal SUV is much harder these days with the amount of options available. More specifically, buyers are driven by the compact SUV category that has saturated the automotive market in recent years.

With so many options, how does one decide?

For us, the decision is in the details, which is why we took an in-depth look at price, performance, style, and headlight design of the popular GMC Terrain and Honda CR-V. While both boast AWD capability and comfortable interiors, there are certain features that make one compact stand out from the other.

Check out our 2021 GMC Terrain and 2021 Honda CR-V comparison to find out which compact SUV wins in our eyes.

Affordability

Oftentimes small SUVs are priced so competitively that it’s almost too close to make a comparison. This is exactly what happens between the 2021 Honda CR-V and 2021 GMC Terrain. The CR-V starts at $25,350, with the Terrain coming in with an MSRP of $25,000. Both offer a range of trims that elevate the price, making its overall affordability around the same.

The winner: We’ll call this a tie.

Style

The Honda CR-V underwent a major redesign in 2017 and its look has remained pretty consistent since. The 2021 model is of the same generation, delivering a clean aesthetic with a roomy interior, chrome accents, and rugged exterior design.

The 2021 GMC Terrain consists of a linear design with a reminiscent body shape of the larger GMC Acadia. What lacks in the GMC is a more characteristic exterior, causing the Terrain to stand out a little less from the beloved CR-V.

The winner: The Honda CR-V.

Performance

Both models come equipped with an Inline-4 engine with similar towing capacities. While the Terrain has a higher torque, the CR-V provides better handling and turning radius. With good performance comes the need for safety, and while both receive high safety ratings, the Honda Sensing safety feature offers the added protection and technology that consumers love.

When it comes down to fuel economy, the CR-V takes the cake. With a MPG of 28 city / 34 highway, the CR-V outbeats the Terrain MPG of 25 city / 30 highway.

The winner: Honda CR-V. For better handling and acceleration, the Honda CR-V delivers the fuel economy and safety buyers enjoy.

Headlight design

The Terrain includes High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps and LED taillamps. Drivers can enjoy the automatic headlight feature as well as available fog light option in certain trims.

The CR-V includes LED headlamps and LED fog lights, perfect for weathering variable driving conditions.

The winner: The 2021 GMC Terrain. It’s look is a little more sleek in design compared to the Honda CR-V.

Key advantages

The CR-V and Terrain share similar amenities that consumers would expect in a small SUV, including 5 seating capacity and five star safety rating. However, there are key differences that give one vehicle an advantage over the other. Check them out below:

Honda CR-V

The most distinguishable advantage of the 2021 Honda CR-V is the available hybrid option. If drivers are looking for an energy efficient drive with excellent fuel economy, then the hybrid option will fill that desire. The CR-V provides better cargo space without sacrificing interior space or comfort as well.

GMC Terrain

The Terrain offers available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all trims, a feature that many modern drivers are appreciating in a new buy. The 2021 GMC Terrain also packs a punch with its 9-speed automatic and superior off-road capabilities.

It comes down to reliability

The 2021 Honda CR-V and 2021 GMC Terrain are both great compact options. When it comes down to resale value, the Honda CR-V comes out on top. If consumers are looking for a reliable auto with considerable cargo space, then the 2021 Honda CR-V is the right fit. There is a reason it was awarded Best Buy for the Money in 2020, and continues to impress buyers across the nation.
